WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
From Gardeners to Farmers
We started gardening because of our love for food. We started farming because of you. We want others to find the joy of the seasons in each bite. We want folks to take a minute to react to a flavor that they may not know and now love. We want you to love food as much as we do.
ABOUT BIRD AND HOPPER FARM
We are a small, sustainable farm in the bucolic foothills of Southwest Virginia. We grow heirloom and open-pollinated vegetables that we sell directly and also use in our handcrafted preserved goods. We also maintain a small flock of Icelandic sheep for fiber and fun. Golden-Laced Wyandotte chickens rule the roost and provide eggs for us and you (along with their Cayuga duck friends), and we have a handful of goats for entertainment and lawn maintenance. This land has many heritage fruit and nut trees we harvest, and plenty of forest delicacies we forage. We honor the Tutelo tribe of indigenous people that were here before us by cultivating their native seeds as often as we can. We see ourselves as part of this ecosystem, and do our best to help it prosper.
OH. AND THE ANIMALS
Sheep, goats, chickens, cats, and wildlife. They all comingle here. And we love them all (most of the time). Everyone has a job, and most of them do it.
